Dear blogging friends...

I have a question that I'm struggling to answer. I'm finding mixed theories, mixed practices...that are leaving me utterly confused, and sometimes frustrated.

When you comment on someones blog, do you go back to that SAME blog to check for a response (if you asked a question) or a follow up comment? And if you do this....where on earth do you find the time to do such a thing?!

I know for me, that I follow over 100 blogs and I REALLY.DO.FOLLOW.THEM (read every post). When I feel inclined, I want to comment, sometimes ask a question--but I expect that person to come back to my blog and leave a comment there. I do not want to click "follow up comments" and have a bajillion and one emails in my box to sift through.

If someone comments and I want to answer their question, or respond...I go to their most recent post and do it. This is the blog courtesy I follow...what do you do? I'll be honest, if you respond to me, in your own comments box, I probably have never seen it. I just simply cannot go back and check every day.

Help....let's join forces and make this all one standard way of communicating...cuz it's driving me crazy.

  1. I do the same thing. I always go to the other persons blog to respond, unless it is someone that I know in real life. If I know them in real life, I catch myself responding on my own blog sometimes, since I'm certain that they will check it.

I have a hard time figuring out WHO is commenting on which post, which is why I started moderating comments. I had no idea when someone was commenting on a previous post, and was missing a lot of responses.

  2. I use email. I set up an email address specifically for my blog and I use that to respond to questions most of the time if the other person has email as well. I don't post responses on my blog or check back on other peoples posts because like you I just dont have the time!

  3. I usually email the person (assuming the email address is available). If not, I comment on her blog! :) You're not alone, my dear.

  4. I agree! I follow about 60 blogs and I do read each and every blog. When someone asks me a question on my blog, I go to their most recent blog and leave my response. I do not leave it in my blog because I don't expect them to come back to that blog (I figure we all have tons of blogs to read). When I leave a question, I always ask them to post their response to one of my blogs or to email me because I probably won't see it otherwise. I have some friends who will post a blog and name it Q & A. They will take all their questions we ask and post it in one blog...not a bad idea.

  5. I try to e-mail them back.
If it goes to "no-reply comment @blogger.com" or whatever it is, I obviously can't email, but if you have it set up with your e-mail I can reply right to their comment via email from my gmail account!

  6. Make sure you have your email address on your blogger profile...as long as your email is posted, bloggers should be able to reply via email to your comments.

  7. I either go back to their blog and comment on their blog, or I reply through the email that I get with the comment in it. Does that make sense?

  8. haha When I first started blogging, I always wondered the same thing. I wasn't real sure what to do, so sometimes I went to his/her page and commented and sometimes I just commented on my own. I must agree that it is a pain to follow up on response(s). I think it is a good idea to just comment on the latest blog he/she has posted, and if it is by chance a response just give a quick reminder if you're responding to a previous comment left.

I'm in for joining the force! ;)

  10. I do the same thing you do, I dont have time either to go back and re-check comments. :)

  11. I mainly go to the most recent post & reply back. but sometimes I'll do an @ whoever made a comment because it's easier at the time; but I never really thought about the other person not coming back to check..that's a good point!

  12. There are an easy setting to change on your dashborard. Click edit profile, and then check the box "allow readers to see my email.". This will allow someone to respond from an email notification directly from the comment received. Then, no more searching for follow-up. I highly recommend it. Feel free to email me at

If you can't figure it out.

  13. Good Question! I'm never sure how to respond to comment questions. I think your way of responding in their blog is probably the best for everyone. When I first started blogging last month, I always checked the "email follow-up comments" box and I was FLOODED with emails. I would wake up to over 120 emails! Yikes, I'll never do that again!

  14. I agree! I never comment back on my own page bc I know I wouldn't have the time to go back to others blog too check. I always just go to their blog and leave a comment!

  15. I've always wondered this too! Usually, if someone comments on a blog and I want to respond to them, I respond to that comment on their newest blog entry in the form of a comment. I didn't know about the e-mailing way that a lot of people are talking about! I'm going to check that out now :)

  16. Well I have always wondered the same thing :) Now I think I'll start posting the responses to questions in their most recent post... It sounds like that is the way to go!

  17. I generally do the same, and go to the persons blog and respond in the most recent post. Just sayin' :)

  18. I'm SO glad you asked this, because I'm new to blogging and was struggling with the same thing! I love everyone's suggestions to set up an email account. I'm going to do that right now :)

  19. I'm so glad you posted this!! When I first started blogging a month ago, I would click the email follow up comments, and see a million messages, from everyone who commented on the same post after me. How annoying!!

I've been just responding on their most recent post, even if I've already posted there once before. I might try emailing people though!

  20. If I get a question (and I get around to answering it -- that is the KEY for me, ugh, I suck), I always comment back at the person's blog for convenience. It's just a pain in the ass to go back and check, and you don't want to click on the "email responses" button because then you see all of the other random comments. :)

  21. Yay! I can comment...although I am not signed in yet. I wonder if that has something to do with it. Anyhoo....I rarely check back on a blog to see if someone responded to my comment, unless I know that they are one of those crazy :) bloggers who respond to every single comment. And even then, I don't always check back, because like you said, I don't have enough time for that. If someone asks me a question or leaves a comment to which I want to respond, I just e-mail them back. Hope that helps!

  22. haha, this is funny. I wonder the same thing too. I do what you do and go to their most recent post and comment there. Way easier and less time consuming.

let's practice, shall we? Hey Katie! How is your tattoo healing?!

  23. What a perfect post for me to comment on! Since you commented on my blog I am coming over to you to give you a shout out :)
Although I do tend to comment on my own blog too, just to be safe...

I love the blog and can't wait to follow!!!

  24. it's high time someone addressed this! haha. i have no answers either. I always try to go to that persons blog and leave a comment on their previous post, like you said.

I like your blog, btw. It's fun!

  25. I'm torn on this one too! I don't like to keep coming back, nor do I like to have the updated comments sent to me. I would rather someone just respond to my comment and write me straight to my email.

I also like to do the same thing for my readers but not everyone has that function set up. Most are on a no-reply setting. That makes it hard to answer questions... duh!?!?

So, if they ask and I know they'll be back, I just go to them. I don't respond in my comments. If they have any email, I prefer that, though.

  26. I vote go to the other person's blog too! I just commented on my blog because I saw that's what other people were doing on their blogs. Being a novice, I just followed suit even though it didn't make a lot of sense to me.

    No more! :-)
