A little 'mom in the pic' fun.

You've all seen that great article from Allison Tate that was on The Huffington Post a few weeks back, right? The Mom Stays in the Picture? If you haven't read it...you should. So good. So so good.

Anyway. The basic gist is that our kids deserve to see photos of their mommas one day. They'll want to. They'll want to be able to know what you looked like when they were babies, and how you looked when you held them, and to see the love on your face. They deserve that. Even though the moms so often feel like the memory keepers, the one who so often ends up behind the camera.

I'm pretty good about this--I often hand my camera over to Declan to let him get shots of me and the girls. I try to, anyway. But I know it's just easier to stay behind the camera most the time. Sometimes it doesn't seem like it's worth the hassle.

This week I finally decided to get my hands on a remote for my camera. When it came I geeked out hardcore and couldn't wait to try it out. Thankfully my sweet little Lucy didn't mind being in some photos with her 'ole Ma.

Yep, I'm in sweatpants. Yep, they aren't technically perfect. But they're photos I now have.

Moms---stay in the picture with your kids. They will thank you one day. Promise.

Happy Friday!

  2. I saw her on the Katie curric show a couple weeks ago & loved that story! My mom has NO pictures from when she was pregnant with me, none! It makes me sad. When I got pregnant with kp I wanted to see some, bc they say you carry like your mom, & I was heart broken when I found out there weren't any! So glad our kids won't feel that. Beautiful pics of you & Lucy girl!

  8. So true and this post is a great reminder! My mom was awesome about taking pictures when we were little and growing up...we all have our own, organized albums. But you are so right, she's hardly in any of the pictures. She's done better recently (now that I'm 29!). I definitely need to be more concious of this now that we have a little one who's scheduled to arrive soon :)

  9. Katie, these are adorable! Very candid and in the moment. Love them!

I'm so guilty of staying behind the camera! Though I must admit, I'm not quite as opposed to it as I was last year. Guess a big weight loss will do that to a person. ;)

  11. So sweet! I have had an infrared remote for my Rebel since M gave it to me four years ago. Did I ever use it? Negative. Such a shame! Did you have trouble with blurry pictures and focus? I've used the self-timer on my camera with C and M multiple times before and seriously took 700 pictures (10 continuous images at a time, holla!) and only, like, 4 pictures were remotely cute. So much work. LOL!

  21. Matt and I have been saying this too. Just failing at it :). We want pictures of our kids WITH us. For our sake and theirs. These are such special days.

And great post yesterday. It is humbling to think of how high a regard our children hold us in! And all the more reason for us to aim to be worthy of who they think us to be. For their own self discipline but also for who they will admire outside the home for friendships and one day a spouse. It's such a heavy burden but at the same time one that carries such a lasting effect. Oh God help us :).

  22. I really really love these pictures of you and little Lucy! I need to get on these blogs more often. I get bad about reading them. I"m mostly on IG and saw your picture talking about your camera remote! I want one! And I didn't know how it worked, but I see that you are holding in...and probably just clicking it when you want a picture. I love it, and now I gotta get one!! Your girl is so sweet and you look great!! Even in the sweatpants you're gorgeous! Thanks for sharing these pictures and about the camera remote!! :-)

  23. Precious! You've inspired me. I bought a remote a few months ago with the intent of documenting one day in our life and I have yet to use it!! I need to get on it!

  24. Ok this made me realize how TRUE this is
I'm always behind the camera and I want them to remember me more about being with them than taking the cute photos One if my fav photos was taken by accident of me and lily 2 yrs ago. She was butt naked (in her naked phase) and I snapped a photo of me and her. It's the best photo of us ever. It's the photo icon I use on everything.
I need to be with them more in photos whether I think I look decent or not haha
    Thanks for this post

  30. Ok, this post is old. So, so old. But I'm reading your archives and I really wanted to comment on this one!

I got married a few months ago and we had a slideshow at our rehearsal dinner. One of the photos my mom found was of me and her when I was maybe 9 months old, and it is now one of my favorite photos ever. I can't explain it; my mom and I are both looking at the camera so it's not like she's looking at me adoringly the way you are with Lucy ( :D ). I don't know. I just love it, and looking at it just makes me happy.
